ERIGAL invites you to the book launch and dialogue around Jules Falquet’s book La combinatoire straight: colonialisme, violences sexuelles et bâtard-es du capital.
Jules Falquet’s La combinatoire straight proposes an original theoretical framework for understanding the deep connections between capitalism, European colonization of the Americas, the genocide of Indigenous peoples, and the slave trade.
At the heart of the analysis is the concept of the combinatoire straight: the set of rules governing unions, filiation, and children’s belonging. In the colonial context, the imposition of new racial and gender logics disrupted this order: not everyone had access to legitimate marriage or recognized filiation. Multiple strategies — including colonial, enslaved, incestuous, and institutional sexual violence (such as in Church-run residential schools) — contributed to producing a new population destined to occupy the continent and sustain mines, fields, armies, and brothels. By exploring the links between sexual violence, forced métissages, and illegitimacy, Falquet shows how this modern-colonial combinatoire straight shaped the world we inhabit today.

Jules Falquet is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Université Paris VIII Saint-Denis and a researcher at LLCP (Laboratoire de recherches et d'études sur les logiques de la philosophie contemporaine). Her main research areas include neoliberal globalization and the social movements that resist it in Abya Yala (peasant, Indigenous, women’s, and feminist movements); situations of war, post-war contexts, and violence, as well as democratization; and materialist, decolonial, and intersectional feminist epistemologies examining the articulation of gender, race, and class relations.
She has published several books, originally in French and all translated into Spanish, including her most recent work, La Combinatoire Straight. Colonialisme, violences sexuelles et Bâtard-es du capital.
