Last Thursday, August 27, we had the pleasure of hosting the launch of Jules Falquet’s new book at Librairie L’Euguélionne.
We had the opportunity to hear from the author herself about her book and the reflections that led her to write it. The event was organized by Julia Islas, PhD candidate and ÉRIGAL member, and featured insightful comments from Nora Nagels, professor and member of our team.
We were particularly delighted to see the bookstore’s space filled with such a large audience, demonstrating the strong interest within the community in the issues and themes addressed in the book.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Jules Falquet as part of our activities leading up to the start of the academic year, and to have the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with her.

Jules Falquet’s La combinatoire straight offers an original theoretical framework for understanding the deep connections between capitalism, European colonization of the Americas, the genocide of Indigenous peoples, and the slave trade.
At the heart of the analysis is the combinatoire straight, understood as the set of rules governing unions, filiation, and children’s belonging. In the colonial context, the imposition of new logics of race and gender profoundly disrupted this order: not everyone had access to legitimate marriage or filial recognition. Multiple strategies—including colonial, enslaver, incestuous, and institutional sexual violence (such as in Church-run residential schools)—thus contributed to producing a new population intended to occupy the continent and supply mines, fields, armies, and brothels.
By exploring the connections between sexual violence, forced métissage, and illegitimacy, Falquet shows how this modern-colonial combinatoire straight has shaped the world we inhabit today.

Jules Falquet is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Université Paris VIII Saint-Denis and a researcher at LLCP (Laboratoire de recherches et d’études sur les logiques de la philosophie contemporaine). Her main research areas include neoliberal globalization and the social movements that resist it in Abya Yala (peasant, Indigenous, women’s, and feminist movements); situations of war, post-war contexts, and violence, as well as democratization; and materialist, decolonial, and intersectional feminist epistemologies examining the articulation of gender, race, and class relations.
She has published several books, initially in French and all subsequently translated into Spanish. Her most recent work is La Combinatoire Straight. Colonialisme, violences sexuelles et Bâtard-es du capital.
