About the conference
Drawing on data from the research project “Educadoras são defensoras dos direitos humanos,” conducted with more than 800 educators from Brazil’s five regions, we will discuss the current context of persecution targeting educators in Latin America and how it affects different segments of the education sector and their intersecting identities and experiences in distinct ways.
In response to this reality, we will present the collective work carried out by the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CLAA) through the development of the Guidelines for Policies and Actions to Support Educators at Risk in Latin America, launched in 2025, as well as a pilot temporary relocation program for educators to be implemented in 2026–2027 by three universities: Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ/Brazil), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP/Brazil), and Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (UPN/Colombia).
About the speaker
Pâmella Passos is a full professor of History at the Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ). She has completed two postdoctoral fellowships, the first in Social Anthropology at Museu Nacional (UFRJ) and the second in Education at UFF. She holds a PhD, a master’s degree, and a bachelor’s degree in History and has taught in basic education for more than 20 years.
Seeking to connect Human Rights and History education, she is deputy leader of the Grupo de Pesquisas em Tecnologia, Educação e Cultura (GPTEC/IFRJ), producing academic, mainstream media, and literary publications. In addition to her teaching and research activities, she serves as an advisor to the Instituto Marielle Franco and is a member of the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CLAA) and the Observatório da Laicidade na Educação (OLÉ/UFF).
