Françoise Montambeault

Director of ERIGAL and Professor of Political Science at the Université de Montréal

francoise.montambeault@umontreal.ca

I earned my Ph.D. in Political Science from McGill University in 2009. I am the director of ERIGAL since its creation in 2017, professor at the Université de Montréal since 2011 and I am the holder the Canada Research Chair in Participation and Citizenship (2019-2029).

My research is rooted in the field of comparative politics. It focuses on citizen participation, democracy, social inclusion, expanding access to citizenship rights, and redefining the boundaries of citizens' belonging to political communities. My recent work examines participatory spaces in Latin America, analyzing practices to better understand their contours and diversity, as well as the effects of these practices on the social and political (re)configurations of state-society relations. In doing so, it demonstrates how citizen participation contributes to defining and redefining the boundaries of citizenship regimes, both within and outside state institutions.

Associate professor. Faculty of Arts and Science - Department of Political Science

Taking a comparative approach, my current research focuses on three main areas

  • Citizenship and participatory policies
  • Informal participation and (re)defining modes of social inclusion
  • Indigenous participation and citizenship
