Nora Nagels
Professor in Development and International Cooperation in the Department of Political Science at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) and Co-Director of ERIGAL.
I earned my PhD in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2013.
My research and teaching focus on comparative politics, feminist studies, development, citizenship, and social policies in Latin America. My recent work is divided into two main areas. First, I explore the relationship between gender equality goals and the design of social policies, analyzing their role in either reproducing or challenging gender inequalities. Second, I examine women’s lived experiences of citizenship as they engage in collective care activities in low-income neighborhoods of Latin American megacities, such as Mexico City. My case studies include Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
I have been a professor at UQÀM since 2014 and co-director of ERIGAL since 2024. After completing my doctorate, I undertook two postdoctoral fellowships at the Université de Montréal. The first was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and the second by the Centre d'Études et de Recherches Internationales de l'Université de Montréal (CÉRIUM). Both were conducted at the Canada Research Chair in Citizenship and Governance.
