Niloofar Moazzami


PhD Candidate in Sociology
I hold a Master’s degree in Sociology from the Université de Montréal and am currently a PhD candidate in Sociology at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), under the supervision of Louis Jacob (UQAM) and Alexandrine Boudreault-Fournier (UVIC). My dissertation examines the possibility of mobilization through street art in a restrictive society such as Cuba, with a particular focus on the influence of street art and street artists, the significance of critical art, and the possibilities for social change that it creates. I am also interested in the spatial dimension of this artistic and political activity, particularly the physical and symbolic occupation of public space.

Through my research, I seek to understand the motivations that lead street artists to choose this form of expression and how artistic activity in public space can generate diverse reactions among the population. I am also interested in the conflicts between authorities and artists that emerge through the process of creating art in public space.

JI have collaborated with the UNESCO Chair on the Philosophical Foundations of Justice and Democratic Society. I was also a member of the Chair’s scientific committee from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, I was an exchange student for two semesters at ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte) in Havana, Cuba.
