We are pleased to announce the publication of Unequal Democracy: Civil Society, Neopluralism, and the Social Construction of Citizenship in Latin America and Beyond, a new volume co-edited by Françoise Montambeault (Université de Montréal) and Tina Hilgers (Concordia University), both research associates at ÉRIGAL. The book is published by McGill-Queen's University Press.
The volume develops the concept of neopluralism, an analytical framework that highlights the heterogeneity of civil society and the unequal ways its various components relate to the state. Drawing on case studies from across Latin America, the contributions examine how the practical exercise of citizenship is unevenly constructed.
The book is also, in a sense, a tribute to Philip Oxhorn, a professor and mentor to Françoise and Tina, whose work on civil society and democracy in Latin America deeply informs the book's conceptual framework.
