Yesterday took place the public conference “Reculs transnationaux antiféministes : Droits des femmes et démocratie en question”, organized by Danielle Coenga-Oliveira (Assistant Professor, UdeM and member of ÉRIGAL), with the support of ÉRIGAL and REQUEF (working group on anti-feminisms).

It brought together a large audience, which allowed for an engaging debate with the speakers. The conference highlighted anti-feminist strategies in different contexts around the world (Québec, Romania, Brazil) which, despite their particularities, reveal a global articulation.

The topics addressed were the following:

  • Priscilla Brito (Activist and Researcher, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – Actions (anti)sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America and Brazil
  • Alexandra Ana (Assistant Professor, UdeM) – Anti-gender movements in Romania
  • Véronique Pronovost (PhD Candidate/Researcher, UQAM) – Mobilization against abortion in Québec

The conference was also marked by an emotional moment with the presentation of the image of Marielle Franco, city councillor in Rio de Janeiro and Black lesbian feminist activist, assassinated in 2018 in what was one of the greatest political crimes in Brazil’s recent history.

Many thanks to all those who attended!
